Improving Shop Floor Productivity

Improving Throughput by Reducing Rework

By: Jae Yong Rhee, Jeffrey Yan and Jessica Wang (BCIT Business Operations Management Students)

You’re invited to attend the following APICS Vancouver / BCIT event:

Wednesday February 20th (dinner meeting): Improving Shop Floor Productivity

Twice per year the BCIT Business Operations Management Program in cooperation with our Industry Partners places teams of students into those organizations to work on “real world” process improvement projects.

Join us on the evening of Wednesday February 20th for a look inside an actual process improvement project as Jae Yong Rhee, Jeffrey Yan and Jessica Wang, three BCIT Business Operations Management students, profile their Fall 2018 project which was conducted at Paris Orthotics (a manufacturer of custom make-to-order orthotics) with the focus to improve factory throughput.

Jae Yong, Jeffrey and Jessica will walk us though the steps that they took including:

  • Initial investigation of symptoms and agreement on scope (Terms of Reference)
  • Data collection via techniques such as Activity Sampling, Direct Time Studies and Rework Data Sheets
  • Development of a system to track first-pass-yield and rework activities
  • Critical Control Point identification and evaluation to establish corrective actions
  • Development of a Dashboard to guide management on Continuous Improvement efforts

This will be of particular interest to any organization interested in improving their factory output levels by identifying and reducing rework rates as Jae Yong, Jeffrey and Jessica will profile how they applied tools learned in the classroom to “the real world” and how you can use the same techniques to improve your operations, or, if you prefer, how you can engage BCIT students to do similar projects at your facility.
